Tim liked his rugby eh? Here’s the text of an email I got from him on 4/9/2001:
this ended up in a nz newspaper, taken at the tri nations decider on saturday…… note that the bloody kiwis didnt run a shot from the end of the game……. the girl next to me is one of our kiwi friends, who looked a lot less happy a bit later on……

Well Radsy, isn’t it funny how one little thing can jog your memory back and make certain images or experiences really vivid in your mind again. Hearing a song that I used to sing with my mum as a little girl, hearing a phrase that my dad always says or smelling a perfume that Lucy or one of my friends always wore. These little memories seem to become even more important to me living on the other side of the world, so far away from the people I love. I recently had a look at your site again one lunch time, having not looked at it for months. I was scrolling though and saw the photos of you given to James by a number of us. It really transported me back to about 6 years ago – all those nights in The Grand where it was always too hot, the surprise farewell party for you before you left for your OS trip that wasn’t a surprise at all, my 21st birthday party – somewhere I have a photo of you and Boydy from that night with our feather boas around your necks…..classy!

Had to go back to reality then, and I had that sort of uneasy feeling in my stomach for the rest of the day. You know the one where you’re going about your day at work, but you know there’s something not quite right and then you remember what it is. Anyway, I’ve decided it’s a good thing – everyone’s biggest fear is forgetting and it’s sort of good to cast your mind back just to keep those memories alive and fresh, even if it means having to face the sadness and loss as well. I’m glad to have Spinni over here with me, so we understand what eachother is talking about when we reminisce about Newcastle and everyone at home. Yourself included. Plenty of good memories which put a smile on our faces.

Being overseas is also strange in that I often think I see someone I know from Australia in the distance. Of course I know it couldn’t possibly them, but just for a split second someone can look really familiar. That’s happened quite a few times with you Tim. Again I get that queasy feeling, but know that I have enough happy memories to overcome it pretty quickly.

I feel lucky to have that.

Luv Cath

Hi all,
In order to save some money I’ve moved timradvan.com to a new server, hosted off my own broadband. You might notice photos download a little slower, or the site is down for short periods sometimes. If you notice protracted downtime, or the site is not behaving as you would expect, please email me.
You’ll also notice that the front page is shorter. As people tend to read the latest entries when they visit, to save load on the server I’ve shortened the front page to the last 3 days worth of entries. You can still read every entry in the archives.
Thanks, James

I had one of those moments yesterday where I wanted to call Tim up and tell him something which only he would know and understand, so I will tell it here instead. The 9 to 5 magazine which is handed out for free on Mondays in Sydney always advertises stuff for hair removal, teeth whitening and plastic surgery etc. When I was flicking through the magazine for this week yesterday, I saw a familiar face on an advert for cosmetic surgery – it was who I thought it was – Kurosh. Kurosh used to work with Tim and was Tim’s supervisor during one of his stints at Concord on the plastics ward. Kurosh took Tim under his wing, seeing that there was talent there and Tim always spoke highly of Kurosh, who was a perfectionist, like Tim. The advert revealed what Tim always suspected – Kurosh has now completed his training and is working in Double Bay specialising in cosmetic surgery. Kurosh had told Tim that that’s where he wanted to be and Tim said to me that he will end up there because he has the drive and determination to do it. Kurosh told Tim he should move to Newcastle and make a name for himself in plastic surgery in Newcastle when he finished his training. Tim was interested in reconstructive plastic surgery rather than cosmetic surgery. It was just one of those poignant moments when you think of what an amazing person we have lost and what amazing things he could have done on this earth.

I hope it’s appropriate to post this here, I think Tim would have been pretty happy to have a nephew. He arrived yesterday and is doing fine. Photos etc on radsy.com blog.
I’ll try and raise him to remember your example, Tim. I can’t think of a finer son to have than somebody like you.
